INTRODUCTION TO OUR LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE BLOG


Welome to the blog page.  I have decided to add a 
section to our website which will provide a wide 
array of information for you the user which you can 
apply to your garden or to learn more about us as 
company.  I will be adding a few paragraphs every 
month on my most current thoughts on our industry 
and other pertinent areas which might interest you.

FIRE IN THE GARDEN

December is a time when there is not that much change in the
garden, as most plants are dormant and temperatures outside 
are to cool to enjoy your outside living environment.  However,
because your garden is in a state of "slow growth", this does
not mean you cannot enjoy the outside.  Often simplistic
garden elements such as a feature which generates warmth
can greatly extend the usage of your garden into the winter
months.  Fire, an effect which is very trendy at the moment,
can greatly enhance and provide areas for wintertime 
conversation over a cup of hot coffee.  While there are many
inexpensive outdoor wood heaters, ie precast fireplaces and 
portable fire pits, many of them can be very flimsy and have
a less than desirable look.  The addition of fire to a garden is 
a very strong design element and should be used and placed in
the garden with consideration.  At night time it will become 
a visual anchor and accent to your night time illumination.
A fire pit placed in the wrong area can actually offset the
balance of the garden, and while it will create warmth, it will
be obvious that your attempt to bring a unique element into 
your garden in not as unique as you thought, because the 
structure is in the wrong place, or the visual effect of the 
element does not have the same integrity of the remaining 
construction of the garden.  To remain unique and make a 
strong statement, the location should be complimented by
accompanied landscape planning and subtle location.  With 
this in mind you will create a unique outdoor space which 
is usable throughout the year.

LONGEVITY - STONE - & THE NET

Often in Landscape Architecture we see many new products
come out on our market, most of them are for day to day use
in the gardens.  However, from time to time we see products
which are introduced for landscape construction, some of which
are great and others not.  In the Western world we live in an 
environment which is much different from Europe, particularly
the difference in garden design. I would narrow it saying the 
Western United States from the rest of the world.  On the 
West Coast we lack a wide array of construction materials 
which can stand the trials of time and weather.  Stone to
 be particular.  In other parts of the country stone is quite 
commonplace as well Europe, because quarry's are abundant. 
 In place of stone on the West Coast we have begun to use 
colored/stamped concrete and colored pavers as a cost saving 
alternative.  All of which have a much shorter life span than
stone.  While in some applications these newer materials are 
a requirement to achieve the desired effect you are working 
for, most of the time they are used only because that is what 
is available.  With the net do not be afraid to search our 
those other materials, as many of them, such as bluestone, 
lannon stone, and limestone are available, and when used 
throughout a rear and front yard, the raw material plus the 
cost of shipping is often less than what your local supply yard 
would charge.Of course your cost of installation is higher, 
but then again I ask, why are you constructing your garden?
